Located 4 miles east of Scottsbluff on Highway 26, about two miles east of the new Hiway 71 interchange. Chilibaba ponds and marsh are on the north side of the road. These wetland areas were established just a few years ago because of the new highway. The pond is just west of County Road 26 and the marsh is another mile to the east.

This area is excellent habitat for many species with some open water, cattails and reeds in water, and a marsh area.

Great-tailed Grackles, Yellow-headed and Red-winged Blackbirds, Pied-billed Grebes, Mallards, Gadwall and Blue-wing Teal nest here, and probably many more species as well.

In the winter, when the water is open, you can find Ring-necked Ducks, Wigeon, Mallards, Gadwall and many other species.

This is a very easy place to view waterfowl. Just be sure to pull well off the side of the highway. Many shorebirds stop here during migration as well as Cinnamon Teal. In 2005 Cattle Egrets, which are rare in Western Nebraska were seen here as well as swans.

Cackling Goose with Canada Geese

White-headed Goose seen on February 17th, 2007.                            Caspian Tern seen May 2008
To me it looks like it has the head and feet of a young
Snow Goose and the body of a Canada Goose.
